WEEK 1 • YOUR JOURNEY BEGINS

Let’s Learn About Hinduism!

Today we’re starting with the BIG picture. You’ll watch a short video, unlock each part of the lesson, answer mini challenges, and finish with a quiz.

🎬 First: Watch This!

Don’t try to memorize everything. Just watch and notice anything that sounds familiar — gods, stories, symbols, beliefs or traditions you already know.

👀 While you watch:

Try to spot three things you already knew and one thing that surprised you.

🌟 So… What IS Hinduism?

Hinduism is one of the world’s oldest living religious traditions. It didn’t begin with one founder on one particular day. It developed over thousands of years in India through teachings, stories, philosophy, rituals and traditions.

SANATANA DHARMA

Sanatana = eternal or timeless   •   Dharma = right living, responsibility and order

💡 Easy way to remember it:

Sanatana Dharma = “The timeless way of living well.”

QUICK CHECK: Who founded Hinduism?

🌌 The BIG Idea: Brahman

Here’s one of the most important ideas you’ll learn in this course.

BRAHMAN

Brahman means the ultimate Divine reality in many Hindu philosophical traditions.

And watch out — Brahman is not the same as Brahma. Brahma is a deity. Brahman is a philosophical idea about ultimate reality.

🌊 Imagine an ocean.

There can be thousands of waves. Every wave looks a little different, but every one of them is still made of the same ocean. That’s one simple picture that can help us begin thinking about the relationship between unity and diversity in Hindu thought.

QUICK CHECK: Brahman is…

✨ What Makes You… YOU?

Your hair changes. Your body changes. Your age changes. Your thoughts change.

Hindu philosophy asks a deeper question:

ATMAN

Atman refers to the deepest self. We’ll eventually connect this idea to reincarnation and moksha.

🤔 Think about it:

If you look completely different when you’re 80 years old, are you still “you”? What makes you the same person?

⚖️ Dharma: What Should I Do?

Dharma can involve right conduct, responsibility and doing what is appropriate in your situation.

🎯 DHARMA CHALLENGE

You find $20 at school and you know exactly who dropped it. Nobody saw you pick it up. What should you do?

Your dharma right now includes things like trying to be a good daughter, sister, friend, student and human being.

QUICK CHECK: Dharma is closest to…

🔄 Karma Is NOT Just “Payback”

You’ve probably heard somebody say: “That’s karma!”

But karma is more interesting than instant cosmic punishment. The idea is connected to action — what we do, why we do it, and the consequences our actions can have.

🚫 Not this:

“You were mean Monday, so you dropped your ice cream Tuesday.” 😂

✅ Think more like this:

Your choices and actions matter. They affect you, other people, and your journey.

♻️ Samsara & Moksha

You only need a preview today.

LIFE → DEATH → REBIRTH → LIFE

That cycle is called SAMSARA.

Liberation from that cycle is called MOKSHA.

We’ll explain exactly how karma, samsara, Atman and moksha fit together later.

🧠 Your Week 1 Power Words

If you remember only these five ideas today, you’re doing great.
